Delivering an AI-powered Talent Matching Platform to Connect Women with Tech Companies

TechFace is a Swiss recruitment agency with an inspiring goal – to make the tech world more accessible to women. To help women connect with tech companies, TechFace held networking events and created a female tech community, which was a major success in Switzerland. As the community grew, TechFace saw the need to go digital. That’s when they decided to build an AI-powered platform that would connect companies with women based on their skills, not their gender. To turn this idea into reality, TechFace came to Modeso for help.

Breaking hiring bias

When Priska Burkard started her career in technology, switching from Medical Laboratory Assistant to Application Engineer and Business Analyst, she experienced first-hand how difficult it is to enter the tech domain.

Companies tend to hire candidates based on their previous jobs, so career switchers automatically get discarded regardless of their skills and expertise. Priska saw the need for a new hiring approach, free from bias.

That’s how the idea of an anonymous talent-matching platform was born. With such a solution, companies could choose candidates based solely on their skills instead of focusing on their past jobs, age, or gender.
TechFace wanted to solve two problems:
Close the talent gap by matching candidates with companies.
Increase diversity and equality in tech.
With this mission, Priska co-founded TechFace and teamed up with Modeso to build an AI-powered platform for women in tech.

TechFace: anonymous talent-matching platform for bias-free hiring

TechFace functions as a job board where companies can post job offers and get matched with suitable candidates. But what makes the platform special is that employers only have access to candidates’ list of skills, desired job type (part-time/full-time), and location. This anonymous matching eliminates any possible bias, helping companies focus solely on hard and soft skills rather than the candidate’s previous jobs or personality.

Here’s how it works:
1

Candidates sign up, create a profile, and upload their CVs and supporting documents.

2

The CV and uploaded documents are sent to the AI model integrated into the platform.

3

The model analyzes CVs, extracts skills, and scans uploaded documents to verify the skills.

4

The model creates a list of confirmed skills and matches candidates with relevant job offers.

5

Employers select suitable candidates based on verified skills, job type, and location.

6

If the candidate accepts the request, the employer gains full access to their profile.

This innovative approach enables companies to shift their focus to the candidate’s expertise and create inclusive and equal teams.

Integrating an AI-powered skill-matching engine

For the core skill-matching feature, we deployed an AI model provided by TechFace that allows the platform to accurately match companies with the right candidates. This AI model was developed as an Innosuisse project, in collaboration with the Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences (FFHS) and Beatrice Paoli's team.

To help employers get a clear picture of the candidate’s expertise, the model creates a list of skills where each has one of three indicators:
Validated for skills that are confirmed by the uploaded documents.
Not validated for skills that the model couldn’t check.
Favorite skill for the main skill of the candidate.
The AI model automated the extraction and validation of skills, enhancing the accuracy and trustworthiness of our talent-matching platform.
When a candidate uploads documents, the platform creates a list of skills, validates them, and matches them with relevant job offers.

Built for women by women

TechFace always remains true to their mission of supporting women in the tech industry. That’s why for this project, we were asked to provide a diverse team that has a high proportion of women. Luckily, women make up 51% of our team so we were able to effortlessly satisfy the request. That’s why for this project, we were asked to involve exclusively female developers. Luckily, women make up 51% of our team so we were able to effortlessly provide female developers for this project, meeting our client's need. This way, TechFace can send a powerful message to the tech community, advocating for equality.

Delivering an MVP in 2 months

TechFace's MVP had to be developed within a tight two-month timeframe so the founders could unveil the platform at the public conference.

We kicked off the project in June 2021, focusing on creating a robust match-making mechanism. Despite the tight deadline, our team ensured that the functionality was polished and reliable. By August, we successfully delivered the first version of the MVP. This initial release included the core match-making functionality but did not yet incorporate the sign-up process for candidates.

Despite the tight deadline, we got the MVP ready before the conference and launched it successfully. It received positive feedback from the community, encouraging TechFace to start the second development phase to finalize the platform's functionality.

Technology stack

For this project, we used our standard technology stack, optimizing it to suit the platform’s needs. We used Node.JS for backend development, offering robust support for server-side operations, and Angular for the front end, providing a dynamic user interface.

Our Python microservice, built using the Flask framework, serves as an intermediary to an external service that handles complex machine-learning tasks like skills extraction and verification.

For managing platform content, we chose AdminJS which acts as a centralized CMS. Its intuitive interface allows administrators to modify data without the need to code, streamlining content management and facilitating seamless updates.

Result: An AI-powered talent-matching platform used by 500 female candidates

Our solution helped TechFace achieve both goals: close the talent gap in tech companies by connecting them with matching candidates and increase equality in tech, helping women get hired.

The platform is now used by the largest community of women in tech. It helped companies like Siemens, Axa, and UBS hire women in tech roles and has provided opportunities to 500 female candidates.

The platform is now used by the largest community of women in tech. It helped more than 60 companies including Siemens, Axa, and UBS hire women in tech roles. We continue to maintain the platform, ensuring its stable performance and continuous updates.
