About TWINT: Switzerland’s No. 1 mobile payment platform

Used by 6M+ people, TWINT has become part of daily life in Switzerland – a single app for sending money, paying in stores, or checking out online. Backed by the country’s largest banks, TWINT connects directly to users’ accounts. It’s a fast and secure way to pay without cards or cash.
Competing with global wallets like Apple Pay and PayPal, TWINT keeps its lead by going beyond payments. Inside the app, users can now buy vouchers, unlock partner deals, and access services like insurance or rewards.
To make that expansion possible, TWINT has worked with Modeso as one of its tech partners. Since 2020, our partnership has evolved from the first voucher module to a full ecosystem – adding deals, store discovery, insurance integrations, and new engagement features such as Spin & Win.
RELATED CASE STUDY

Inside InsurHub: Bringing insurance to TWINT users

Würth Financial Services AG, an 80-year-old Swiss insurance broker, taps a new market with InsurHub service. Built in partnership with Modeso, it sold 15K+ insurance products within the TWINT app and won a Swiss Insurance Innovation Award in its first year.

TWINT x Modeso: Working side-by-side since 2020

Over the years, Modeso has helped design, build, and maintain user-facing and “partner-function” modules that shape TWINT’s marketplace.

Milestone 1:
Digital Voucher, 3M+ purchases

The first partner-function module Modeso built for TWINT – a simple way for users to buy and redeem brand vouchers inside the app.
Users purchased 3M+ vouchers through this feature (per TWINT, Feb 2025)
What we did:
Built a standardized integration layer to connect multiple merchant APIs
Designed the purchase flow to support flexible voucher amounts, discount codes, and gifting
Applied security-by-design, aligned with OWASP standards, and passed independent penetration testing before launch
Deployed on GCP with Kubernetes autoscaling to handle monthly traffic peaks

Milestone 2:
Super Deals, 300K+ redemptions

Brings partner discounts directly into TWINT, giving users curated offers and exclusive promotions.
Users have redeemed Super Deals around 300,000 times.
What we did:
Engineered the module end-to-end and deployed it on GCP with Kubernetes autoscaling to stay stable during traffic and campaign spikes
Built a full merchant admin panel where partners can manage deals, set pricing, track stock, run flash sales, and review analytics
The backend handles complex business logic across diverse product categories, from electronics to lifestyle goods.

Milestone 3:
Storefinder, thousands of POS locations

Helps users find the nearest TWINT-compatible point of sale in seconds (shops, petrol stations, and services)
Supports both in-store and on-the-go payments
What we did:
Built a map-based interface in Angular that integrates merchant location data and categories (starting with petrol stations)
Implemented the backend using Node.js and MongoDB to store and serve merchant metadata efficiently
Added category filters and fast geolocation search to make it easy for users to discover nearby TWINT-enabled locations
Deployed the service on GCP with Kubernetes autoscaling for reliability across tens of thousands of merchant access points

Milestone 4:
Insurhub (with Würth), Innovation Award winner

Brings insurance into the TWINT ecosystem. Users can browse, compare, and buy policies in just a few taps. A joint project between Würth Financial Services, TWINT, and Modeso.
Within its first year, Insurhub sold 15,000+ policies and earned second place in the 2022 Swiss Insurance Innovation Award (per Würth Annual Report, 2023)
What we did:
Built the full integration between Würth and TWINT, from product syncing to secure policy activation
Designed an in-app purchase flow that follows TWINT’s native UI
Implemented the backend with Node.js, MongoDB, and secure partner endpoints for safe data exchange and smooth policy issuance
Added reporting and monitoring tools so Würth can track performance and validate product-market fit

Milestone 5:
Spin & Win, nearly 6 million spins

TWINT’s gamified engagement feature used for seasonal campaigns, partner promotions, and user rewards.
Users have spun the wheel almost 6 million times, making it one of TWINT’s most popular partner features.
What we did:
Engineered the module end-to-end, including animations and reward logic
Designed a high-frequency event handling to coordinate spins and ensure fairness during large traffic bursts
Added a partner-facing layer for configuring campaigns, prize pools, win probabilities, and durations

Modeso’s engineering standards applied inside TWINT

We worked directly inside TWINT’s marketplace and partner-integration streams, sharing standups, design reviews, and Jira boards with their product, UX, and QA teams. This setup let us build features that fit TWINT’s architecture and banking workflows from day one.
1

Security built to Swiss financial standards

All modules met Swiss financial security standards, including nFADP, OWASP principles, independent penetration testing, and data minimization. We applied security-by-design across backend and frontend. All partner endpoints were secured and audited.

2

Stability under load, 150K+ orders/hour

TWINT experiences traffic spikes during campaigns and partner promotions. We built every module on GCP + Kubernetes autoscaling, with Node.js, MongoDB, and RabbitMQ behind the scenes. We ran performance tests to confirm the system could handle 150,000+ orders per hour without degradation.

3

Speed aligned with TWINT’s release cycle

We aligned our sprints to TWINT’s internal release rhythm, shipping small increments that could be safely rolled out to millions of users. This let TWINT launch new partner modules quickly while maintaining the stability expected in Swiss payments.

4

Reliability for millions of Swiss residents

TWINT is used by 6M+ people and accepted at 80%+ stores in Switzerland, so stability after launch is non-negotiable.We monitor performance, fix issues, and extend modules as new partners join the TWINT marketplace.

Modeso AG is one of our strategic software partners for implementing selected partner functions within the TWINT Apps.
